Walk into any hardware store and you will find deck oils, stains, and paints all promising to protect your timber. They behave very differently, and choosing wrongly is how people end up with a deck that needs stripping back in two years.
The three options

Decking oil
Oil penetrates rather than forming a film, so it cannot peel. As it wears, it fades evenly and you simply clean and recoat. That makes it the easiest to maintain and the most common choice for Melbourne decks.
The trade-off is frequency. Fully exposed decks need recoating yearly; sheltered ones stretch to two years.
Best for: most residential decks, especially hardwood where you want the grain visible.
Stain
Stain works like oil but carries more pigment. That pigment blocks UV, which is what actually degrades timber, so stains generally last longer than clear or lightly tinted oils. You still see the grain, just coloured.
Best for: decks where you want a colour change, or to even out mismatched boards after repairs.
Paint
Paint forms a film over the timber. It gives the longest interval between recoats and complete colour freedom, but there are real downsides on a horizontal surface underfoot. Water that gets under the film causes peeling, and once a painted deck starts peeling the only proper fix is stripping or sanding it all back.
Best for: softwood decks, already-painted decks, or where a specific colour matters more than the timber look. Less suited to decks in full sun and rain.
What actually decides it
- Timber type. Hardwoods look best oiled. Treated pine takes stain or paint well.
- Exposure. Fully exposed decks favour oil or stain, which fail gracefully rather than peeling.
- Current finish. You generally cannot oil over paint. Going from paint back to oil means full removal.
- Maintenance appetite. Oil is quick and frequent. Paint is infrequent but a bigger job when it comes.
- The look you want. Hiding the grain is a one-way decision in practice.
Preparation is the same either way
Whatever you choose, the deck needs cleaning, any grey weathered fibre removed, damaged boards replaced, loose fixings refixed, and the timber left fully dry. Applying any finish to damp timber is the single most common cause of early failure.
New decks also need to weather for a period before their first finish, so the timber can accept it properly. Check the supplier’s guidance for your specific boards.
