Matching a period profile
This is the part that distinguishes a good job. Victorian and Edwardian homes used dozens of cornice profiles, and a standard modern cover cornice looks obviously wrong beside them. Options are to source a matching pre-made profile, or to have a section run or cast to match the existing.
If you are repairing only part of a room, keeping the profile consistent matters more than the cost difference.
Why the flexible filler point matters
The wall-to-ceiling joint moves. Filling it with rigid compound guarantees the crack returns, usually within a season. A flexible filler absorbs that movement, which is why properly repaired cornice joints stay looking good and badly repaired ones crack again every year.

Then it needs painting properly
A cornice repair is not finished until it is sealed and painted. Fresh compound absorbs paint differently, so unsealed repairs show as dull patches. And because the cornice runs continuously around the room, the whole run needs repainting rather than a spot touch-up.
Most people take the opportunity to repaint the ceiling at the same time, since the two meet.
