The good news is that most tired decks can be restored rather than replaced. Here is what that involves.
Restore or replace?

The surface boards can look terrible while the frame underneath is perfectly sound, which is why a deck that seems beyond saving often is not. What matters is the structure, not the colour.
The restoration process
- Inspect the boards, fixings, joists and bearers for rot and movement
- Repair or replace damaged boards and re-fix anything loose
- Clean with a suitable deck cleaner to lift grey weathered fibres, mould and old residue
- Sand the surface smooth and remove splinters
- Let it dry fully, which matters enormously for adhesion
- Apply the finish, usually two coats, worked into the timber
Skipping the drying step is the most common cause of a finish that fails within a season.
When to do it
Spring and autumn are ideal in Melbourne. You need a run of dry days: the timber must be dry before finishing, and the finish needs time to cure without rain. Avoid finishing in direct summer heat, which dries the surface too fast, and avoid the wettest winter weeks.
As a rough guide, most Melbourne decks need re-oiling every one to two years, and a full sand and restoration every four to six years, depending on exposure.
Signs your deck needs attention now
- The colour has gone silver-grey
- Water soaks straight in instead of beading
- Splinters when you walk barefoot

The water test is the simplest: sprinkle some on the boards. If it beads, the finish is still working. If it soaks straight in, the timber is unprotected.
Choosing someone to do it
Ask what preparation is included, which product they will use and why, how many coats, and what happens if they find rot once sanding starts. A quote that only covers “clean and oil” with no mention of sanding or repairs is pricing a different job from one that includes them.
Also ask about your balustrade, stairs and any pergola or screening. These weather differently from the deck floor and are often forgotten in quotes.
