When to replace instead
- Cabinets are swollen or crumbling, which is common under sinks and around dishwashers.
- Vinyl-wrapped doors are peeling or bubbling. Paint won’t fix the wrap lifting underneath.

How professional cabinet painting works
- Remove doors, drawers and hardware. Everything is labelled so it goes back in the right place.
- Degrease thoroughly. Kitchen cabinets carry a film of cooking grease that stops paint from sticking, so this step is essential.
- Sand and repair. Surfaces are sanded to help the primer grip, and chips and dents are filled.
- Prime. A bonding or adhesion primer suited to the material is applied.
- Apply the top coats. Two coats of a hard-wearing enamel are applied, either sprayed or rolled with a fine finish.
- Allow proper curing. Enamel paints can feel dry within hours but take longer to fully harden, so doors need careful handling for the first few days.
- Reinstall. Doors and drawers go back on, often with new handles for an updated look.
Choosing the finish
Satin and semi-gloss finishes are the most practical for kitchens, because they wipe clean easily and handle daily use. Gloss looks striking on modern flat-panel doors, but it shows every imperfection, so the preparation must be flawless.
Popular colours include soft whites, warm greys, sage and deep greens, navy, and two-tone schemes with darker lower cabinets and lighter uppers.
