Spring Prep: What to Fix Before Summer Painting

Winter is hard on a Melbourne home. Months of rain, damp and cold reveal problems that were hidden, and those problems need fixing before any summer painting, not after. Spring is the repair season, and getting it right now is what makes a summer repaint last.

Walk around the house first

Pick a clear day and look properly at these:

  • Gutters and downpipes. Blocked or overflowing gutters are the single biggest cause of exterior paint failure. Water running down a wall all winter destroys the finish.
  • Timber at ground level. Weatherboards, posts and door frames near soil or paving are where rot starts. Press them. Soft is a problem.
  • Window sills and frames. Horizontal surfaces hold water. Check for flaking paint and soft timber.
  • Render and brickwork. Look for new cracks and tap for hollow, drummy sections.
  • Eaves and fascias. The most exposed and least inspected part of the house.
  • Mould. Shaded south-facing walls and fences collect it over winter.
  • Decks and fences. Grey, splintery timber and loose boards.

Fix the water first, always

This is the rule that saves the most money. If water is getting in, no paint job survives it. Clear the gutters, check the downpipes drain away from the walls, look for roof leaks and sort any drainage that pools against the house.

Paint applied over an unresolved water problem fails within a season, and you pay twice.

The order of work

  1. Drainage and gutters — stop water getting in
  2. Roof and flashing — anything leaking gets fixed
  3. Timber repairs — replace rotten boards, sills and posts
  4. Render and plaster repairs — cut out drummy sections, fill cracks
  5. Let everything dry — this is why spring matters, it needs weeks not days
  6. Wash the exterior — remove salt, dirt, mould and chalky residue
  7. Then paint — once the surface is sound and dry

Skipping step five is the most common mistake. Painting over damp timber or fresh render traps moisture and guarantees failure.

Why drying time makes spring the deadline

Repaired render can need weeks to cure before painting. Timber that has been wet all winter needs time to dry out. New plaster needs to be fully dry. If you start repairs in November hoping to paint in December, the drying time alone will push you into the new year.

Starting repairs now is what makes a pre-Christmas or January paint job actually possible.

If access equipment is going up, do everything at that height in one visit: eaves, fascias, gutters, upper windows and any high repairs. Going back later means paying for access twice.

Same logic outdoors: deck, fence, pergola and gates weather together and look best finished together.

What you can do yourself

  • Clear the gutters, or have them cleared
  • Cut back plants touching the walls, which trap moisture
  • Wash down mould on accessible surfaces
  • Move pots and furniture away from walls
  • Note anything that concerns you so the quote covers it
