Painting in Hot Weather: Why 35°C Days Are a Problem

Melbourne summers deliver 35 and 40 degree days, and those are some of the worst conditions possible for painting. Most people assume hot and dry is ideal. In practice, extreme heat causes more paint failures than rain does.

What heat does to paint

Paint needs to dry at a controlled rate so it can form a continuous, well-bonded film. In extreme heat the surface dries almost instantly while the layer underneath is still wet. That causes:

  • Poor adhesion, because the paint skins over before it bonds to the surface
  • Brush and lap marks, as the edge dries before the next section is joined
  • Blistering, when solvent or moisture trapped underneath tries to escape
  • Cracking and flaking months later, from a film that never cured properly
  • Colour inconsistency across a wall painted at different times of day

Surface temperature, not air temperature

This is the part that catches people out. On a 32 degree day, a dark north or west-facing wall in direct sun can be well over 50 degrees. Most paint manufacturers specify a maximum surface temperature, commonly around 35 degrees, and that limit is about the wall, not the forecast.

A simple check: if you cannot hold your palm flat against the wall comfortably, it is too hot to paint.

How professionals work through summer

  1. Follow the shade. Start on the east side in the morning, move west as the day goes on, never painting a wall in direct sun.
  2. Start early. Beginning at 7am captures the coolest, most workable hours.
  3. Stop when it peaks. Many crews pause through the hottest part of the afternoon and return later.
  4. Keep a wet edge. Working in smaller sections stops edges drying before they are joined.
  5. Watch the wind. Hot northerly wind dries paint even faster than still heat.
  6. Reschedule extreme days. Above about 35 degrees, most exterior work should simply not happen.

Interiors are different

Inside, summer is largely fine. Air conditioning helps, drying is quicker than in winter, and low-odour paints clear fast with windows open. The main watch-point is not painting a room in direct afternoon sun through large windows, where the same surface temperature problem applies.

Early December and late February tend to be more workable than the peak of January. Mild days in the low to mid twenties with light cloud are ideal. Long stretches of settled weather are the real advantage of summer, as long as the extreme days are avoided rather than pushed through.

What to ask your painter

  • What temperature will you stop work at?
  • How will you avoid painting walls in direct sun?
  • What happens to the schedule during a heatwave?
  • Which product are you using, and what is its maximum surface temperature?

A painter who says heat is no problem is either using the shade properly or cutting corners. It is worth finding out which.
