You’ve just had a room painted and you want to move the furniture back, hang pictures and use the space again. How long do you have to wait?
The answer depends on whether you mean dry or cured. They’re not the same thing, and knowing the difference protects your new paintwork from marks and damage.
Dry, recoat and cured: what each means
- Touch dry means the surface no longer feels wet. This can happen in as little as 30 minutes for water-based paint.
- Recoat time is how long you must wait before applying the next coat. Painting too soon can lift the coat underneath.
- Fully cured means the paint has hardened all the way through and reached its final durability. This takes far longer than drying.
Typical drying and curing times
| Paint type | Touch dry | Recoat | Fully cured |
|---|---|---|---|
| Water-based (acrylic) walls | 30 min – 1 hr | 2 – 4 hrs | 2 – 4 weeks |
| Water-based enamel (trims) | 1 – 2 hrs | 4 – 6 hrs | 2 – 4 weeks |
| Oil-based enamel | 6 – 8 hrs | 16 – 24 hrs | Up to 30 days |
| Ceiling paint | 30 min – 1 hr | 2 – 4 hrs | 2 – 4 weeks |
| Exterior acrylic | 1 – 2 hrs | 4 – 6 hrs | 2 – 4 weeks |
These are general guides only. Always check the tin, because times vary between products.

What slows drying down
- Cold weather. Most paints need a minimum temperature to cure properly, often around 10°C. Melbourne winter mornings can fall below this.
- Humidity. Damp air slows evaporation, so paint stays wet longer.
- Poor ventilation. Still air in a closed room holds moisture and extends drying time.
- Thick coats. Heavy application takes much longer to dry and can stay soft underneath.
- Surface type. Non-porous surfaces like gloss and tiles hold paint wet longer than bare plaster.
What you can do while paint cures
Even when paint feels dry, it stays soft for weeks. During that period:
- Wait at least a few days before pushing furniture against freshly painted walls, and leave a small gap where you can.
- Avoid scrubbing or washing new paint for about four weeks. Wipe gently with a damp cloth if needed.
- Be careful with tape, hooks and adhesive strips on new paintwork.
- Keep pets away from freshly painted trims and doors.
- Leave doors and windows slightly open where possible so they don’t stick to the frames.
Speeding things up safely
You can help paint dry faster by opening windows for cross-ventilation, using fans to move air around the room, keeping the room at a comfortable temperature, and applying thin, even coats rather than one heavy one. What you shouldn’t do is use a heat gun or point a heater directly at fresh paint, which can cause cracking or bubbling.

Exterior painting and Melbourne weather
Outside, timing matters even more. Paint needs dry conditions to cure, so rain within a few hours of application can ruin a coat. Very hot, sunny days are also a problem, because paint dries too fast on the surface and doesn’t bond properly. Mild, dry days with light cloud are ideal, which is why spring and autumn suit exterior work in Melbourne.
Why professionals plan around drying times
A good painter schedules each coat around the product’s recoat time and the day’s conditions, rather than rushing. That’s part of why a proper job takes longer than a cheap one, and why it lasts.

FAQ
How long before I can move furniture back?
Light items can usually go back the next day. Wait a few days before pushing heavy furniture against walls, and leave a small gap where you can.
How long until I can wash the walls?
Allow around four weeks for paint to cure before scrubbing or washing.
Can I paint a second coat the same day?
Often yes with water-based paint, as long as you follow the recoat time on the tin. Oil-based enamels usually need overnight.
Does paint smell mean it’s still drying?
Not necessarily. Some odour can linger after paint is dry. Good ventilation helps it clear faster.
