Most people find choosing paint colours harder than choosing the painter. Samples look different at home than in the shop, the light changes through the day, and once it is on the wall it is expensive to change your mind.
Here is what actually happens in a colour consultation and how to get the most out of one.
What a colour consultation is
It is a structured conversation about your home, not a sales pitch for a particular brand. A good consultation covers what you like, what you dislike, how each room is used, what light it gets, and what you are keeping: floors, benchtops, tiles, joinery and furniture.
The aim is a scheme that works together across the whole house, rather than a colour chosen room by room that ends up feeling disconnected.
Why light matters more than the swatch
The same colour behaves completely differently depending on which way a room faces.

Undertones, the thing most people miss
Every neutral has an undertone: pink, yellow, green, blue or grey. Two greiges that look identical on a chart can clash badly once they are on adjoining walls, or fight with your flooring.
A consultation spends more time on undertones than on the headline colour, because that is what makes a scheme feel considered rather than accidental.
What to have ready
- Photos of each room, taken at different times of day
- Samples or photos of flooring, tiles, benchtops and joinery
- Any furniture or rugs you are keeping
- Images of schemes you like, and ones you do not
- A note of which rooms you want to feel calm, bright or cosy
Being clear about dislikes is as useful as likes. It narrows the options quickly.
Testing properly
Paint large sample patches, at least A4 size, and place them on more than one wall in the room. Look at them in the morning, in the afternoon and at night under your own lights. Put them next to the skirting boards and flooring rather than in the middle of a wall.
Leave the samples up for a couple of days before deciding. First impressions of colour change surprisingly fast.
Whole-house schemes
Most homes work best with a small palette used consistently: one main wall colour, one ceiling colour, one trim colour, and one or two accents for feature areas. Flowing the same neutral through hallways and living areas makes a home feel larger and more cohesive.

How many colours should a house use?

Should I match my colours to trends?
Only where you like them. You live with the result for years; your fixed finishes and your own taste matter more than a trend.
Can I change my mind after the first coat?
You can, but it costs. Testing large samples first is far cheaper.
