Painting a light colour over a dark wall is one of the most common jobs that goes wrong for homeowners. Two coats go on, it dries, and the old colour is still faintly there, patchy in the corners and showing through around the edges.
Here is why it happens and how professionals get a clean, even result.
Why dark to light is hard
Paint is not fully opaque. Each coat lets a small amount of what is underneath show through. Over a mid-grey that is invisible, but over a deep navy, charcoal or burgundy it reads as a shadow, especially where light hits the wall from the side.
Strong pigments make it worse. Deep reds, oranges and some blues are the most likely to ghost through a pale top coat, no matter how many coats you apply.
The step that fixes it: a tinted undercoat
The professional answer is not more top coats. It is a grey-tinted undercoat.
Most paint manufacturers offer undercoats tinted to different grey levels. You choose the level based on how dark the existing colour is and how light the new one will be. The undercoat kills the old colour completely, so your top coats only have to deliver colour, not coverage.
Without it, you may need four or five coats and still see ghosting. With it, two top coats is usually enough.
How the job should run
- Wash the walls to remove dust, grease and marks
- Fill and sand any holes or damage, then dust off
- Spot-prime bare patches and repairs
- Apply one coat of tinted undercoat across the whole wall
- Check under raking light for any dark areas still showing
- Apply two coats of the finish colour
Colour choices that make it easier

If you love a dark room but want a change, moving to another mid-depth colour is far simpler than going pale.
Don’t forget the edges
Dark colours usually carry onto the wall edges, behind radiators, above picture rails and into corners. These are exactly the spots where the old colour reappears if preparation was rushed. Cutting in carefully with undercoat, not just top coat, is what gives a crisp result.
If the previous owner painted the walls a dark colour but left the ceiling white, check whether the dark has crept onto the ceiling edge. That line often needs cutting back in.
Texture and sheen matter too
A glossier finish shows imperfections more, so if your walls have patched areas, going from a flat dark colour to a satin white will highlight every repair. Consider a low sheen instead, and allow for filling and sanding in the plan.
