Walk past two painting jobs and you might see one team spraying and another rolling. Both are legitimate, and good painters use all three tools, choosing whichever suits the surface in front of them.
Here’s how spraying, brushing and rolling compare, and which one your job is likely to need.

Rolling
Rolling is the standard for interior walls and ceilings. It applies a consistent film quickly, needs little masking, and leaves a fine, even texture most people never notice. Different nap lengths suit different surfaces, with short nap for smooth plaster and longer nap for render and textured walls.
Best for: interior walls, ceilings, large flat surfaces.
Brushing
Brushes are essential for cutting in around ceilings, corners, skirting boards and architraves, and for detailed work like window frames, fretwork and cast-iron lace. A well-brushed trim looks crisp, and brushes reach into places nothing else can.
Best for: trims, edges, detail work, period features.
Spraying
Airless spraying lays down the smoothest finish of the three, with no brush or roller texture at all. It covers large areas very quickly and gets into profiles and grooves that are awkward to brush, which is why it’s favoured for doors, cabinetry, gates, fences and new builds.
The trade-off is preparation. Overspray travels, so everything not being painted must be masked and covered, which takes time. In an occupied home with furniture, floors and fittings in place, that masking can take longer than the painting itself.
Best for: empty rooms, new builds, doors and cabinetry, large exterior surfaces, fences and gates.
Which will your job use?
Most jobs use a combination. A typical interior repaint is cut in with a brush and rolled on walls and ceilings, with trims and doors brushed or sprayed. A cabinet refinish is usually sprayed for a factory-smooth look. A weatherboard exterior may be sprayed and then back-rolled or back-brushed, which means working the paint into the surface straight after spraying so it bonds properly.
Does spraying use more paint?
Generally yes. Some paint is lost to overspray and atomisation, so a sprayed job can use noticeably more material than a rolled one. Against that, spraying is much faster on the right job, so labour time drops. Which works out cheaper depends entirely on the job.

- How many coats, and what’s the total film build?
