Every home collects marks: scuffs in the hallway, a chip where a chair hit the wall, a patch where a picture hook came out. Touching up paint is quick and cheap, but done badly it leaves an obvious patch that looks worse than the mark did.
Here’s how to touch up paint so the repair disappears, and how to store leftover paint so it’s still usable when you need it.
Why touch-ups often stand out
- Different sheen. Touch-up paint dries slightly shinier or duller than the surrounding wall.
- Colour drift. Paint fades slowly with light and cleaning, so the original colour no longer matches exactly.
- Different batch. Even the same colour can vary slightly between mixing batches.
- Different application. A brushed patch on a rolled wall shows a different texture.
- No primer on repairs. Filled areas absorb paint differently and end up looking flat.
How to touch up paint properly
- Clean the area. Wash off dirt and grease, then let it dry fully.
- Fix the damage. Fill chips and holes, let the filler dry, then sand flush with fine sandpaper.
- Spot-prime repairs. Any filled or bare area needs a primer, or it will dry patchy.
- Use the original paint. Stir it well. If it has separated badly or smells sour, it’s past its best.
- Match the application. If the wall was rolled, use a small roller rather than a brush.
- Feather the edges. Work from the centre outward and blend the edge, rather than painting a hard-edged square.
- Keep it thin. Two light coats blend better than one heavy one.

When to repaint the whole wall instead
Sometimes a touch-up won’t blend no matter how carefully it’s done. Repaint the full wall when the damage is large, when the wall has faded noticeably, when you’re touching up a dark or strong colour, or when the finish is a higher sheen like satin or semi-gloss, which shows patches far more readily. Painting from corner to corner gives an even result.
Storing leftover paint
| Do | Don’t |
|---|---|
| Label the tin with the room, colour, sheen and date | Leave tins outside or in a hot shed |
| Wipe the rim clean before sealing the lid | Store paint where it can freeze |
| Press the lid down firmly all the way around | Leave a half-empty tin open to air |
| Keep tins somewhere cool, dry and out of reach | Rely on memory for which colour went where |
Water-based paint that has been properly sealed often stays usable for a couple of years. If it has a rancid smell, has dried into lumps, or won’t stir back to a smooth consistency, it needs replacing.

Keep a record of your colours
The simplest thing you can do for future touch-ups is write down the brand, colour name, colour code and sheen for every room, and keep it somewhere you’ll find it. A photo of the tin label saved on your phone works well. Without that record, matching a colour later usually means a colour-match scan, which gets close but not always exact.
Disposing of old paint
Don’t tip leftover paint down the drain or put liquid paint in your bin. Many Victorian councils and paint retailers offer paint drop-off points for safe disposal and recycling. Check your council’s website for the nearest collection option.

FAQ
Why does my touch-up look shinier than the wall?
Fresh paint often dries with a slightly different sheen. Feathering the edges helps, but on satin or semi-gloss walls it’s usually better to repaint the whole wall.
How long does leftover paint last?
Properly sealed water-based paint often keeps for a couple of years. Check the smell and consistency before using it.
Can I get paint colour matched?
Yes, most paint retailers can scan a sample and mix a close match, though it may not be perfect.
Should I touch up with a brush or roller?
Match whatever was used originally. Rolled walls touch up best with a small roller.
