The deck gets used more between November and March than the rest of the year combined. If yours is grey, splintery or slippery, now is the time to deal with it, because restoration needs dry weather and a few days of curing before anyone walks on it.
Why spring is the window
Deck work needs the timber genuinely dry, several clear days in a row, and moderate temperatures so the finish cures rather than flashing off. Spring gives you that. Waiting until December means competing for bookings and risking your deck being out of action during the weeks you want it.
As a rule, allow three to four weeks between deciding and having a finished deck you can use.
The five-minute assessment
Walk out and check:
- Colour. Silver-grey means the finish has gone and UV is hitting bare timber.
- Water test. Sprinkle some on. Beading means the finish is working. Soaking straight in means it is not.
- Splinters. Run a hand along a board. Rough or splintery needs sanding, not just re-oiling.
- Movement. Any spongy or bouncy boards are a structural issue, not a finish one.
- Fixings. Popped nails or screws need refixing before anyone is barefoot on it.
- Mould. Black patches in shaded areas need treating, not just coating over.

Drying and curing time sits on top of those figures. A deck finished on a Friday is generally not ready for a party on the Saturday.
Do the whole outdoor area
If the deck is being done, the things around it usually need attention too, and doing them together costs less than separate visits:
- Balustrades and stairs, which weather differently from the deck floor
- Pergolas and privacy screens
- The fence, especially the section the deck looks onto
- Exterior doors and window frames opening onto the deck
- Planter boxes and outdoor furniture
Choosing the finish
For most Melbourne decks, oil is the practical choice: it soaks in, cannot peel, and is easy to refresh each year. Stain lasts longer because the pigment blocks UV. Paint gives the longest interval but peels when it eventually fails, which is a bigger job to put right on a horizontal surface.
If the deck sits in full sun, lean toward stain or a pigmented oil. Clear finishes break down fastest.
Plan the timing around use
The deck will be unusable for several days, and you should keep furniture off the new finish for longer than that. Book it for a week you are not entertaining, and allow a buffer for rain pushing the schedule.
