Rendering transforms the look of a brick or block home more completely than paint alone. It is also a job where the preparation and the product choice matter enormously, because render that fails takes the paint with it.
Here is what to know before hiring a renderer.
What rendering involves
Render is a coating applied over masonry to give a smooth or textured finish. It is used to modernise dated brick, cover mismatched brickwork after extensions, improve weather resistance, and create the flat look that suits contemporary architecture.
The two main systems you will be quoted for:

Cement or acrylic?

Acrylic render has polymers added, making it more flexible and quicker to cure. It bonds to surfaces cement render struggles with, and resists hairline cracking better. It generally costs more.
For most Melbourne brick homes either works, and the decision comes down to the substrate and budget. What matters more is that the surface is prepared correctly and the render is allowed to cure before painting.
Why render cracks
Some hairline cracking is normal as render cures. Problems come from:
