Metal railing painting in Melbourne is rarely just a coat of paint. Railings, balustrades, gates and fences are the first things to show their age on a property, and in bayside suburbs they go considerably faster. Salt air accelerates corrosion, and once rust is established under a coating it keeps working whether you can see it or not.
This guide covers how to treat each type of metal, what rust actually requires, and when a repaint is no longer the right answer.
Surface rust or structural rust?
The first judgement is whether you have a cosmetic problem or a safety one.
Surface rust sits on top of sound metal. The section is still solid, the rust comes back to bright metal with wire brushing or sanding, and the item is safe. This is a preparation and coating job.
Structural rust has eaten into the section. Signs include flaking in layers, pitting you can feel, metal that flexes where it should not, and — the definitive test — a screwdriver pushed into the metal going somewhere it should not. On a balustrade or a handrail this is a safety matter, and the affected section needs replacing rather than coating.
Pay particular attention to the base of posts where they meet concrete, and to any point where two sections are joined or bolted. Those are where water sits and where corrosion starts.
Metal railing painting: preparation by surface type
| Surface | Preparation | Primer |
|---|---|---|
| Bare or rusted steel | Rust removed back to sound metal | Zinc-rich or rust-inhibiting metal primer |
| New galvanised steel | Weather it, or degrease and etch | Etch primer suited to galvanising |
| Weathered galvanised | Clean and degrease thoroughly | Etch or direct-to-galvanised primer |
| Powder-coated aluminium | Clean, de-gloss and key the surface | Adhesion primer for non-ferrous metals |
| Wrought iron | Rust removal, often by hand on detail work | Rust-inhibiting metal primer |
| Aluminium | Degrease and abrade lightly | Etch primer |
The row that causes the most failures is new galvanised steel. The zinc coating is too slick and too reactive for paint to bond to straight away. It either needs to weather for several months, or be treated with a proper etch primer. Paint applied directly to fresh galvanising peels off in sheets, and it is a surprisingly common mistake.
Powder-coated surfaces are the second trap. They are designed to shed everything, including paint. Without de-glossing and the right adhesion primer, a topcoat will not hold.
Dealing with rust properly
- Remove it. Wire brush, abrasive disc, needle gun or sanding, back to sound metal. The more thoroughly rust is removed, the longer the result lasts.
- Decide on a converter. Rust converters chemically stabilise residual rust in pitting that cannot be mechanically reached. They are useful in detail and awkward corners. They are not a substitute for removal on accessible surfaces.
- Prime immediately. Bare steel starts flash rusting within hours in humid weather. Prime the same day, not next week.
- Two top coats of an exterior-grade metal finish.
- Pay attention to edges and fixings. Coatings thin out on sharp edges and that is where failure starts. A stripe coat by brush on edges and welds before the full coat makes a real difference.
Bayside and salt air
If you are within a few kilometres of the bay, salt deposition changes the maintenance picture. Washing metalwork with fresh water a few times a year removes accumulated salt and meaningfully extends coating life. It costs nothing and almost nobody does it.
Specify a system rated for coastal exposure, and expect a shorter recoat interval than the same railing would need inland.
What this applies to
- Front fences and gates, including heritage wrought iron
- Balcony and stair balustrades
- Handrails and pool fencing
- Security doors and window grilles
- Garage doors, steel posts, pergola frames and carport uprights
- Downpipes, gutters and metal fascia
For front gates and entry metalwork done as part of a street-appeal refresh, see front door and garage door painting. For timber fences rather than metal, see fence painting and staining.
Period and heritage metalwork
Melbourne has a great deal of original cast and wrought iron on Victorian and Edwardian properties: lacework, verandah posts, palisade fences. This work needs patience rather than power tools, because aggressive abrasive methods damage the detail that makes it worth keeping.
If the property sits in a heritage overlay, colour may be controlled, and replacing rather than repairing original ironwork may need approval. Check before committing.
Expert Painting and Renovation
Expert Painting and Renovation is a family-run, Aussie-local company based in Richmond with more than 9 years of experience on Melbourne homes, including a great many period properties with original ironwork and plenty of bayside properties where salt is part of the job.
We will tell you when a section has gone too far to coat. Our work covers exterior painting, house painting and timber restoration.

FAQ
Can you paint over rust? Not over loose or flaking rust. It must be removed back to sound metal first. Rust converters help with residual rust in pitting, but they do not replace proper removal.
Why did paint peel off my new galvanised fence? Fresh galvanising will not accept paint directly. It needs to weather for several months or be treated with an etch primer made for galvanised surfaces.
Can powder-coated aluminium be repainted? Yes, provided it is cleaned, de-glossed and primed with an adhesion primer. Painted straight over, it will not bond.
How often should metalwork be repainted near the bay? More often than inland. Washing with fresh water a few times a year extends it considerably.
When does a railing need replacing instead of painting? When corrosion has reduced the section thickness, when metal flexes where it should not, or when a fixing has rusted through. On a balustrade or handrail that is a safety question, not a cosmetic one.
